Vedic Maths: Fast Calculation Tricks for Students
Vedic maths is a system of fast mental-calculation techniques based on 16 sutras (word-formulae). For students, it means solving in seconds what normally takes a full page — a real advantage in exams like JEE, NDA, IMU CET and any aptitude test. Here's a beginner-friendly start.
What is Vedic maths?
Vedic maths reduces long calculations to simple, pattern-based steps you can do in your head. It doesn't replace school maths — it makes the arithmetic inside bigger problems much faster, so you spend your time thinking, not computing.
Trick 1 — Multiply numbers near a base (Nikhilam)
To multiply numbers close to 100: for 97 × 96, the deficits are −3 and −4. Add crosswise: 97 − 4 = 93 (or 96 − 3 = 93). Multiply the deficits: 3 × 4 = 12. Answer: 9312.
Trick 2 — Multiply any two numbers (Urdhva Tiryagbhyam)
The "vertically and crosswise" sutra multiplies any numbers in one line. For 23 × 12: units 3×2 = 6; cross (2×2 + 3×1) = 7; tens 2×1 = 2 → 276. With practice this becomes a single mental sweep.
Trick 3 — Square numbers ending in 5
For 75²: multiply the first digit by the next (7 × 8 = 56) and append 25 → 5625. Works every time.
Trick 4 — Instant subtraction (Nikhilam for 10s)
To subtract from a power of 10, use "all from 9 and the last from 10". 10000 − 6789 → 3211. No borrowing needed.
Trick 5 — Quick division by 9
For 1234 ÷ 9: bring down 1, add to next (1+2 = 3), then (3+3 = 6) → quotient 136 with a remainder step. A neat shortcut once you practise it.
How to start learning Vedic maths
Pick one sutra a week, practise it on 10–15 numbers, and only then move on. Speed comes from repetition, not memorising all 16 at once. Pair these with our fun maths tricks, and for exam-focused speed see our JEE Maths and IMU CET coaching.
Frequently asked questions
Is Vedic maths useful for competitive exams?
Very. Exams like JEE, NDA, IMU CET, CAT and bank tests reward speed and accuracy in calculation, and Vedic maths shortcuts save valuable seconds per question.
Can Vedic maths replace normal maths?
No. Vedic maths speeds up the arithmetic within problems, but you still need conceptual understanding from school maths. The two work best together.
How long does it take to learn Vedic maths?
You can learn the most useful tricks in a few weeks with daily practice. Mastery of all 16 sutras takes longer, but even 4–5 sutras give a big speed boost.
